Grus

A southern hemisphere constellation that is located just south of Piscis Austrinus and the brilliant Fomalhaut. It’s bright enough to be fairly eye-catching and the triangle formed by alpha-beta-delta is surprisingly distinctive, perhaps because the sky around there is a little dull.

Best picked out in October.

Historically

Originally the stars that make up Grus, a representation of a flying bird, were part of Piscis Austrinus. Looking at the shape they create, it’s not obvious why Keyser and de Houtman perceived it as a crane. Certainly it’s not a patch on Cygnus. Ian Ridpath points out in his book Startales that they have also been represented as other birds such as a heron or flamingo.
